The executive explained that the company’s forecasting services can provide significant value to the solar industry of the coffee-producing country.
At the recent Expo Solar Colombia 2024, which took place at Plaza Mayor last October, Suncast stood out as one of the most innovative companies for its use of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies for renewable energies.
Pedro Correa, Suncast’s CTO, shared with H2News how the company’s participation in the fair, as a part of ProChile’s commercial mission, allowed them to establish crucial connections in the Colombian market and present success cases of their technology in Chile. His presentation on artificial intelligence and renewable energies captured a great deal of interest, validating Suncast’s leadership in forecasting and optimizing solar and wind operations.
It is important to mention that Suncast is one of the winning companies of the call made by ProChile to participate in the event, with the objective of seeking new commercial spaces for local companies to offer technological solutions to the renewable energy industry.
Correa explained that the forecasting services provided by Suncast can contribute great value to Colombia, as its installed solar capacity continues to grow and advanced tools are needed to ensure a stable network. With improvements in forecasting accuracy and local regulations, the company seeks to implement pilots in the country and test their effectiveness under tropical conditions.
How can Suncast’s experience at Expo Solar Colombia 2024 be summarized from a point of view of its business objectives, and connections and as a part of the mission coordinated by ProChile?
Our participation in Expo Solar Colombia 2024 was highly successful and aligned with our business objectives. The fair allowed us to connect with other leading companies in the renewable energies industry, expanding our network, and exploring new opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, I had the opportunity to present our talk about “Artificial Intelligence for Renewable Energies: success cases in Chile”, where we highlighted the results obtained in Chile, which sparked great interest among the audience.
“We were also able to show our leadership in forecasting and optimization technologies for solar and wind power plants, which opens a promising path for us to consolidate our position in the Colombian electricity market”.
In regards to the presentation you held, how was the receptiveness of the message and Suncast’s innovative proposal by those attending the conference?
There was a very positive reception of the talk from part of the audience. Will the hall completely full, we were able to see a high degree of interest in the topic of Artificial Intelligence in renewable energies with an audience made up of specialists from the sector.
Answering the technical questions from the public, we demonstrated our expertise in solar energy and the value we bring with our solutions. The technical dialogue that was generated was an excellent way to highlight Suncast’s leadership in the use of artificial intelligence for the management and optimization of renewable energies, proving, even more, the relevance of our innovative proposal to a specialized audience.
What is the added value of Suncast’s forecasting services and why do you consider that they could be of interest to the Colombian market?
Suncast provides high-accuracy forecasts based on artificial intelligence, which allows solar power plants to optimize their operation and provide stability in power grid operation. For the Colombian market, which currently has around 1300 MW of installed solar power capacity (equivalent to Chile in 2016), Suncast’s services may be particularly valuable because the country is in a rapid growth phase in renewable energies.
“We are confident that our services can help improve the clean source integration into the power grid, providing stability and forecasting as Colombia’s solar capacity continues to expand. The experience we have gathered in Chile, managing forecasts of over 20% of the country’s installed solar and wind capacity, has positioned us as a strategic partner to contribute to the efficient development of solar energy in Colombia”.
Can you share some of the meetings held and/or the connections made in the course of the Expo Solar Colombia 2024?
We were able to make significant progress in commercial relations with some of the country’s most important energy companies. These meetings allowed us to not only present the value of our forecasting services but also to explore concrete opportunities for future collaborations.
Based on these connections, we are very optimistic about the possibility of new pilots of our solar energy forecasting services in Colombia in the upcoming months. These initiatives are an opportunity to validate the precision of our forecasts in the Colombian context and consolidate our position in this strategic market.
Are you currently working on any features for your services that you could give us an insight into?
Yes, Suncast is currently working on many new features that will allow us to continue to improve the precision and utility of our services. One of the most relevant developments is the adaptation of our forecasting system to the specific requirements of XM, which is the operator of the National Interconnected System (SIN) and the administrator of the Wholesale Energy Market (MEM) of Colombia.
This allows us to align our forecasts with local regulations and guarantee that solar power plants in Colombia can comply with the operator’s requirements, helping the solar power plants to integrate into the Colombian electricity system more efficiently.
“In addition, we have developed the incorporation of multiple meteorological models to guarantee the maximum precision of our forecasts. This implies the optimized combination of different meteorological sources, which is particularly useful in tropical climates, like Colombia, where the variability of the climate increases the uncertainty of solar energy generation”.
By using these new models, we seek to offer our Colombian clients a more robust, adaptable and precise forecasting system that provides them with the tools needed to face the specific challenges of the local climate environment.
