Constanza Levicán, Suncast’s founder and CEO, details the technical challenges and the area’s preparation for the requirements that will come into force in September concerning forecasting and new error metrics for renewable energy power plants.

Chile’s energy landscape is preparing for a significant transformation with the implementation of new requirements of the Technical Standard for Coordination and Operation, whose version in April 2025 seeks greater accuracy in solar and wind energy forecasts. These changes, which will come into full force on September 29, promise to impact the operation of renewable energy power plants and the planning of the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional.

The standard includes the obligation to submit 240-hour forecasts for PMG power plants with self-dispatch, as well as drastically increasing the frequency of forecasts for the following 48 hours, from four times a day to once every hour.

In an interview with ELECTROMINERÍA, Constanza Levicán, founder and CEO of Suncast, a company specializing in the development of forecasting solutions, broke down the implications of the new update, highlighting the technical challenges associated with the initiative.

The executive emphasized the exponential increase in the number of forecasts to be sent - from 60 to 720 per month from every power plant for the next 48 hours - and the complexity of implementing new predictive models for the probabilities of exceedance.
